Our Star State Champion For Free Throws

Award Given Out At The 96th Annual Meeting

Danielle Wynn and her parents displaying the Trophy for winning the Nevada State Knight's of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championship.

Danielle participated in the 1st Annual Free Throw contest held by the Knight's of Columbus, Mesquite Council #13754. The local hoop shoot was held in December 2005 at the Mesquite Recreation Center for girls and boys, 5 age groups from 10-14. Each age group winner received a basketball for their efforts. Danielle, age 14, had a score of 14 free throws out of 15 and Kyle Martinez, Age 10, sunk 13 of 15 to compete at the District 5 competition in Las Vegas. Medals were won by Danielle by sinking 22 baskets out of 25 and won the State finals with 21 out of 25. Kyle won District but failed at the State level.

Danielle is shown above with the Nevada Trophy awarded during the State Annual Convention held this year in Boulder City. She also received an engraved basketball for her win. She competed against contestants from 40 other councils located across the State. Ms Wynn also plays basketball at Hughes Middle School and has won many awards for her skill in shooting baskets. Our congratulations goes’ out to Danielle and we wish her every success on and off the court. Also Kyle is to be congratulated for his wins and here's wishing him good luck next year.

The Knight's of Columbus will be holding both their Free Soccer and Basketball competitions again this year in October and December for all boys and girls ages 10 to 14 at the city Recreation Center. Winners of each age bracket will receive Soccer and Basketballs with a chance to win at District and State level. More information will follow closer to the dates of these events. We would especially like to thank all of those children that participated along with their parents that took the time to get them involved in community activities. The Knight's of Columbus acknowledges the importance of events like these that involve the youth of our great community. We also would like to thank all of those who volunteered to help with these events and the Mesquite Recreation Center that made their facility available.

Retired Flag

Second Annual Retired Flag Disposal Ceremony

The Knights of Columbus Council #13754 sponsored a “Retired Flag Receptacle” at Wells Fargo Bank on Mesquite Boulevard in Mesquite, Nevada. The dedication was on March 10, 2004. Brother Knight Bill Trippello donated the Mail Box type receptacle and Brother Rob Wyatt, the manager of the Wells Fargo Branch provided the space. Brother Jim McCluskey, Grand Knight of the council dedicated the receptacle assisted by Cub Scout Pack #70 and Pack Leader Mrs. Durbin, Commander of the American Legion Post, and representatives of the Mesquite Fire Department. Retired American flags can be deposited in the receptacle at any time and will be retrieved by the Mesquite Knights of Columbus for proper disposal through the Elks, American Legion, and the Fire Department.

We Look For Ways To Help!

The newly formed Knights of Columbus Council #13754 is looking to identify itself with the community of Mesquite, Nevada, and participate in activities for the good of the area and its residents. This is one of many such activities and events the council hopes to sponsor in the future.

NOVEMBER 2005

Mesquite Council #13754 conducted it's first annual Tootsie Roll Drive with the proceeds going to the Mesquite Special Olympics. We had collection points at the American First Credit Union, Wells Fargo Bank and Smith's Food King. Our Council Committee Director obtained two round container about 3 ft in length x 2 ft in diameter. Brother Roybal painted them to depict a Tootsie Roll with the proper stenciling to identify them as Mesquite Knights of Columbus Drive for the mentally handicapped members of Mesquite Special Olympics. We were fortunate to have several young members with their parents to assist in obtaining donations. We collected over $1,000 and have sent this into the State Council. Tootsie Rolls not distributed was handed out to our CCD class last week and the remainder to the members of the Special Olympics attending Golf lessons each week.

Thanks to all those helping and donating.

SEPTEMBER 2005

Mesquite Council #13754 held it's 1st Annual Knights of Columbus (K of C) picnic on Sept 5, 2005.  We had a picnic last year as the Bunkerville Roundtable of Council 9899 but this was our 1st as a Council.  It was attended by 50 Knight's which is double the attendance last year.  The attendance included our families with several prospective members also included.  We collected $90 for the Katrina Relief fund which is being added too by our Council.  We also presented Mrs. JoAnn Talsness a Certificate of Appreciation for her most generous donations of a 1991 Cadillac and a powered wheel chair.  JoAnn was our honored guest in recognition of her donation and in memory of her deceased husband whom was an inactive K of C.  All had a good time and enjoyed the "favorite dishes" brought by our loving wife's along with the hot dogs and hamburgers provided by the Council. Brother Jake Pitts was the "Chef" and did the cooking.  Brother's Roybal and Perkowski provided the Guitar music while a few tried to sing along.  Our winter social gathering will be held in Feb at the "Blue Moon over Oasis".  We hope to build a spirit of fraternity in our new Council and get to know each other.

JULY 2005

Mesquite Council #13754 held it's 1st Annual Acolyte Servers Breakfast at the Casa Blanca Casino, Buffet, 9AM, July 23, 2005.  In attendance were 11 Altar boys & Girls with two parents. Brother Terry Perkowski, Youth Committee Director/Chairman with help from Brother Fred Andre, hosted the event.  Our beloved pastor/Chaplin, Father Clarence, said grace and gave an appropriate talk to our young server's.  Four brother Knight's including the Grand Knight and his wife, were in attendance.  Everyone had a nice time and the Acolytes enjoyed themselves. Father Clarence expressed his appreciation during Sunday Mass to the Knight's of Columbus for our first of many such events.  Next year we hope to be able to pay for the Acolytes and their parents but due to our limited resources at this time we could only afford to pay for the server's themselves, their director and Father.  The total cost was $100 and 21 hrs.

Vivat Jesus! Brother Jim McCluskey, GK
